Police-servitor face-off: Shreemandir gate closed, general darshan halted

Puri: A standoff continues at the Jagannath temple after a servitor was beaten up by the police Thursday evening.

With the servitors not opening the door of Bhitara Bedha till 9 am, all the rituals got affected.  With rituals not happening as norm, thousands of devotees were made to wait at the main gate of the temple. The devotees coming from far were seen shedding tears as they were denied darshan of the lords.

According to last reports that came in, general darshan has been halted and the Collector is having a discussion with the servitors to find out a way to end the stalemate.

Three devotees from West Bengal were going into the temple Thursday evening. The policeman on duty doubted one of them being a foreigner and asked for their identity cards.

In the security checking, when a senior servitor Bhabani Shankar Mohapatra intervened the police man allegedly attacked him.
