Poll violence: BJD worker assaulted by Cong activists

Bolangir: With just a few days ahead of the second phase elections scheduled for April 18, pre-poll violence erupted in Bolangir with a BJD worker sustaining critical injuries after being attacked by some Congress activists.

Congress workers allegedly barged into the Biju Janata Dal office at Chandanbhati under Sadar Police Station in the district late Sunday night before attacking BJD worker Prafulla Meher.

Meher, who reportedly sustained grevious injuries in the attack, has been admitted to the Bolangir District Headquarters Hospital (DHH).

“I was sitting inside the BJD office when a group of 20 to 25 Congress workers barged into the office and thrashed me,” alleged Meher.

Cutting across party lines, BJP candidate from Bolangri Assembly constituency Ananta Das along with his supporters Sunday gheraoed the SP office demanding immediate arrest of the accused involved in the attack.

Sitting MLA and Congress candidate from Bolangir Assembly constituency Narasingha Mishra and Bolangir Lok Sabha candidate Samarendra Mishra visited Chandanbhati village and met the Superintendent of Police in connection with the incident. Later, Samarendra accused the BJD of creating violence in the region.

Meanwhile, one section of force has been deployed at Chandanbhati to maintain law and order situation in the village.

Meanwhile, at least 11 persons including four women were critically injured in a clash between two groups in Nuapada district Sunday.

According to sources, the clash broke out between two groups at Tohlepada under Khariar police limits over suspected past enmity. The members of one group pelted stones at the rival group, leaving 11 of them injured.

While seven persons with serious injuries were admitted to Khariar hospital, four others were shifted to a hospital in Raipur, Chhattisgarh.

Upon being informed, Nuapada Superintendent of Police along with a police team reached the spot and tried to bring the situation under control.
