Bhubaneswar: The state Congress Friday demanded immediate arrest of all the accused involved in the alleged gang-rape of a minor girl at Polsara in Ganjam and their trial in a fast-track court.

Senior Congress leader and former Minister Bijaylaxmi Sahu told the newsmen here that an eight-year girl was forcefully taken from her house by three miscreants while she was sleeping with her parents Wednesday night and gang-raped in a farmland close to her house.

The miscreants also looted gold ornaments and cash from the house. Describing the crime as most heinous, the Congress leader demanded death sentence for all the accused.

The state government, she said, should take all responsibility of the victim and a compensation of Rs 50 lakh be paid to her family members.

Sahu threatened that the party would hit the street if the accused involved in the crime were not arrested within 24 hours.

She came down heavily on the chief minister for his silence over the incident even though it took place in his home district.

Condemning the incident, the former minister said neither the chief minister nor the Women and Child Development Minister had spoken a word on the incident or visited the victim.

She alleged that crimes against women have increased manifold during the BJD rule.

Every day as many as six women are being raped and eight are killed in the state. But the chief minister who is in charge of the Home department is not taking any step to prevent the crimes against women.

The chief minister owning moral responsibility should step down from the post, she said and announced that a team of the Mahila Congress, the women wing of the party, led by its president Sumitra Jena, will visit Polsara for an on-the-spot probe Saturday and would meet the girl, her parents and the police.
