Berhampur: Health services in Berhampur-based MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Ganjam district were severely disrupted as electricity supply to the casualty ward of the hospital was disconnected Sunday morning.
Resentment brewed among the patients and their family members after people were deprived of treatment following the electricity disconnection. Many serious patients had to be referred to other hospitals as the staff could not attend to them due to the power cut.
People blamed the medical authorities of being negligent and not making use of the generators installed by the government in the hospital.
“MKCG is one of the busiest hospitals in southern Odisha and people from all over including Andhra Pradesh visit it every day for treatment. Government is spending crores of rupees for installing various facilities. However, people have to go through unwanted problems due to indifferent and negligent attitude of officials concerned,” an angry family member of a patient expressed.
According to reports, in a bid to avoid such disruption in power supply, a soundless digital generator has been installed to provide 24×7 electricity supply to the hospital. It is highly efficient and automatic. Whenever the power supply gets disconnected, it automatically starts and provides electricity to the entire hospital.
Despite all the arrangements why electricity supply to the casualty ward was disrupted has become the talk of the town.
The electricity supply was disconnected for about one-and-half hours due to some unknown reasons following which the digital generator was started to supply power to the entire hospital except the casualty ward as a result of which the patients who had come from various places had a tough time.
When contacted, casualty manager Saroj Samal said the electricity supply to the casualty ward was hit as the digital generator installation work was going on at that time. Hospital administrative head Sudam Mandal said an enquiry would be conducted and appropriate action would be taken against those found responsible for the disruption.
