Chandahandi: Yet another incident of poor road connectivity playing with the lives of people living in remote areas of the state surfaced Sunday after a pregnant woman had to be carried on cot to avail health services in Nabarangpur district.
The incident was reported from Bhelukote village under Patakhalia panchayat in this district Sunday.
According to a source, Bodei Santa from this village experienced labour pain Sunday morning. Even though her family members attempted to get an ambulance, weak phone signal delayed their plans for two hours to take the woman to the hospital.
With no options left, the family members with the help of some villagers placed the lady on a cot and carried her for nearly three kilometres to get an auto-rickshaw.
The woman was then taken to the Chandahandi Community Health Centre where she delivered a baby boy.
In a similar incident, another pregnant woman from Gaurajharia village under Patakhalia panchayat in Chandahandi block was also carried on a cot to the hospital with the help of an ambulance driver. The woman gave birth to a baby in the jungle before reaching the ambulance.
Locals said that there are no motorable roads to their villages. Even though they have been struggling with the same issue for decades, the administration is yet to take any step to build all-weather motorable roads.
