Preparations to mitigate impact of Cyclone ‘Yaas’ almost complete in Ganjam district

Chhatrapur: Ganjam district is on the verge of completing its preparations to mitigate the impact of the severe cyclonic storm ‘Yaas’.

Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) Praddep Kumar Jena informed Tuesday that shifting of pregnant women has been carried out in the last three days. They have been shifted to hospitals and health centres with facilities to ensure safe deliveries. A total of 504 such women have been identified in the district and 131 have been shifted in ambulances to identified delivery points.

The process of evacuating of 75,000 persons from vulnerable areas is also underway with about 90 per cent of them having already been shifted.

Informing about the preparations, District Collector Vijay Amruta Kulange said they are well-prepared to tackle the cyclone threat even though there is no cyclone warning for the district. “We are taking all measures following the state government’s SOPs,” stated Kulange

As expected, the windspeeds will be high to damage kutcha houses in the district. So tehsildars and block development officers (BDOs) are alerting people through public address systems. Those living in kutcha houses have been asked to shift to safer places. We have also warned fishermen against venturing into the sea.  We will allow them only after receiving green signal from the IMD,” Kulange added.
