Cuttack: A 26-year-old man died at SCB Medical College and Hospital here Saturday while he was on judicial custody, police said.
Bharat Mondal of Telenga Bazar here was arrested by police as a non-bailable warrant was pending against him. He was produced in court March 28 which sent him to judicial custody the same day.
The prison authorities sent him to hospital as he was unwell. While undergoing treatment at the SCB Medical College and Hospital here, Bharat died Saturday morning.
The family members of Mondal alleged that he died due to police torture. “Police initially told us that they did not know anything about my son. They produced him in the court March 28. They had killed my son by torturing him. There were several injuries on his body,” claimed victim’s mother Runa Mondal.
Runa said they would raise the issue with Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC).
City DCP Akhileswar Singh denied the allegations of the family members of Bharat and said he was wanted in an attempt to murder case and was arrested March 28 and on the same day he was produced before a court which sent him to jail.
“While in jail custody, the deceased was taken ill and he was shifted to the hospital where he died this morning while undergoing treatment,” the DCP said.
Notably, Mondal was a wrestler and he had represented the state in several national-level events.
