Sajanagad: Senior superintendent of Baripada Circle Jail Niranjan Das Friday started a probe into an allegation that the husband of Nilagiri jailer had been doing official work for a long time inside the jail.
A video that had gone viral showed that Madhabananda Patra, husband of jailer Mamata Bala Patra, was busy doing all important official work in the jail like computer operation and medicine distribution. She has been the jail-in-charge for the last one year.
When the matter came to the fore December 1, various quarters pointed fingers at loopholes and laxity in the jail security and safety of inmates. Patra had also admitted that as she was not acquainted with computer work, her husband was doing it on her behalf.
Many pointed out that when there are strict rules for entry of private persons to the jail, how the jailer’s husband was allowed to do official work.
Madhabananda was operating computers, giving medicines to inmates, preparing duty charts of staff and preparing menu for inmates and doing computer entry of names of inmates who will be given bails. Surprisingly, there was no official order from the government to allow Madhabananda to do all such work inside the jail.
The senior superintendent did not reveal details about the investigation, but said that he would submit his report to his higher-up.
