Basudevpur: Amid allegations about proliferation of bootlegging of country liquor and spurious wine in Basudevpur area of Bhadrak, some villagers along with women folks staged a road blockade on the Chudamani-Iram Road Sunday.

They voiced concern over possibility of a liquor tragedy if liquor proliferation is allowed to go on like this.

Interestingly, angry locals put up fences on the road while a woman activist, identified as Jayanti Das, lied across the road in protest against rampant liquor trade.

Vehicular movement came to a standstill on this thoroughfare from morning till noon. People had a tough time in commuting on the route in the peak hours.

The agitators alleged that the administration is doing nothing against the bootleggers and demanded punitive action against the hooch traders.

Agitators lamented that liquor sale and consumption has visited the village environment with drunkards often found creating mess.

They also pointed out that illegal liquor sale has turned out to be a cottage industry on coastal pockets under this block, but police and excise officials have failed to take right measures in this direction.

Police from Basudevpur police station rushed to the spot and tried to pacify the agitating people.
