Protesting villagers plant paddy saplings on damaged road

Kendrapara: Expressing anger at the district administration for not repairing the rundown Orta-Bijaynagar road, residents of Oliha village in Mahakalapada block Wednesday planted paddy saplings on the muddy road and blocked it by burning tyres. Traffic on the road came to a halt due to the protest.

The protesters said it had become difficult to use the Orta-Bijaynagar road as it is completely run down. They said thousands of people face problems on the road near Oliha.

The protesters said they have raised the matter several times with the R&B Department and the district administration, but in vain.

The R&B Department had been constructing the road from Orta to Bijaynagar at an estimated cost of Rs 2.26 crore. But due to the negligence of the contactor and officials, the work is moving at a snail’s pace.

R&B officials, the police and a local magistrate rushed to the spot and held talks with protesters. The blockade was withdrawn after the contractor started repair works.
