Public ignominy: Rape victim attempts suicide, admitted to SCB

Cuttack, Dec 2: The condition of a minor girl of Bhadrak who was admitted to SCB Medical College and Hospital here Monday was stated to be critical as she was shifted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of the medicine department, Tuesday.
The 16-year-old girl of Khaparapada under Dhusuri police limits of Bhadrak district was allegedly raped by a JCB machine operator November 28 after which she attempted
suicide.
An eight-member team headed by medicine department’s Dhirendra Maharana was constituted to ensure proper treatment of the girl. Emergency officer Bhubanananda Maharana was chosen to coordinate with the panel in which medicine department head CBK Mohanty, forensic medicine and toxicology (FMT) department head Manoj Jena, neurosurgery head Sudhanashu Mishra are also the members.
The team will meet Wednesday to take stock of the free treatment being provided to the girl, said the emergency officer.
The victim’s mother filed a complaint with Dhusuri police alleging her daughter was raped by the machine operator who was residing in a rented house near the village Pump House. Two youths saw the girl entering the room of the accused and waited there for a while. They also saw the driver coming out of the room.
Soon, some villagers gathered around and forced the accused to open the door. Failing to bear the embarrassment, the girl rushed out of the room and attempted suicide by hanging herself with her scarf at her residence.
Meanwhile, police arrested accused Rabindra Bindhani of Lodhabani in Mayurbhanj district from Dhamnagar area in Bhadrak. “Bindhani has been forwarded to court Tuesday and investigations are on,” Dhusuri IIC Amit Kumar Biswal said.
