Puri district administration suspends chariot construction work due to cyclone ‘Amphan’ threat

Puri: The Puri district administration has suspended for two days the construction work of chariots in view of impending cyclonic storm ‘Amphan’. The decision was announced Monday night by the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA). Hence work has been suspended from Tuesday.

Sources said, till Monday the servitors have completed the construction of 42 ‘Tumba’ and 24 wheels of the three chariots. Work on the Arakanta, Bala, Pandari and Patdari which are the key parts of the chariots have also been completed.

The Puri district administration is on high alert as the cyclone ‘Amphan’ is approaching landfall. The blocks of Astaranga, Kakatpur, Gop and Konark are also on high alert.

A 21-member team of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has already arrived in Puri. Also 60 teams of ODRAF along with fire brigade personnel are maintaining constant vigil.

Puri district collector Balwant Singh has informed that power supply will be suspended if the wind speed exceeds 40km/hr.

Notably, the ‘Patitapaban Bana’ atop the ‘Nilachakra’ of Jagannath Temple in the holy city was blown away Monday afternoon due to the high wind speed created by the approaching cyclone.
