Ragging alleged on Berhampur University campus

Berhampur: An inmate of Rusikulya Hostel in Berhampur University was allegedly subjected to ragging by seniors on the hostel premises December 12.

When contacted, PG Council chairman Devi Prasanna Patnaik admitted to have received a complaint of the victim Monday. The victim has complained to the university authorities copies of which were forwarded to the Chief Minister, Governor and State Human Rights Commission December 13.

The victim apprehending threat to his life has been residing outside since December 13. The incident has occurred despite the university authorities’ claim of an anti-ragging unit functioning on the basis of UGC guidelines.

The victim has urged the university authorities to direct the anti-ragging squad to probe the matter and submit its report, Patnaik said. The incident comes after a video of a peon being tied to a pole and assaulted by the students in a hostel went viral, Patnaik said.

According to the complaint the victim, a student of first year journalism and mass communication department has been staying in Room No.99 in Rushikulya hostel. The incident occurred when two MBA students (first year), four students of second year Marine Science and Mathematics department barged into his room in an inebriated condition and abused him and asked him to do sit-ups.

He has alleged that such incidents are not new as the accused seniors and some outsiders are entering the hotel frequently and torturing juniors under the influence of alcohol.
