Keonjhar: The management of a local government degree engineering college Monday initiated disciplinary action against six students for their alleged involvement in a ragging case.
A committee headed by principal Trilochan Mishra held six 4th year students responsible for the incident and expelled them from the hostel.
The committee also decided to remove the hostel matron over the ragging incident, the principal said.
Assistant collector Vasundhara Bhitiria, Jyotirmayee Mishra of SP office, HoDs of various departments, two non-teaching staff and a lady lecturer were part of the disciplinary committee that took the action.
The decision was taken after the committee members had prolonged talk with the both 3rd year and 4th year students, it was learnt.
It was alleged that the 4th year students had ragged their juniors last Wednesday and didn’t allow them to take their dinner. This resulted in a girl taking ill. She was admitted to a nearby hospital.
Based on a complaint, the college authorities constituted the ragging committee and held a meeting Monday.
On the other hand, some 4th year girls approached the SP alleging a lecturer of the college was involved in the matter. They also alleged that the 3rd year students had misbehaved with the hostel superintendent over water scarcity in the hostel due to load shedding.
As a meeting over the issue was to be held Wednesday, they decided only to delay the dinner. On the issue of illness of the student, the senior students said she had stomach problem earlier which is why she was taken to the hospital. However, some lecturers biased the junior students to lodge complaint against the seniors, alleged the 4th year students.
