Ragging scourge: Murderous attack on junior students in City

Bhubaneswar: Two first year students of a reputed government college here Tuesday brought ragging allegations against some senior students of the college. The duo also lodged a complaint with Khandagiri police in this regard.

The victims were identified as Satya Swarup Nayak and Saubhagya Nayak who have been pursuing B-Tech in the Agriculture stream at the Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT). Both of them have been staying in the hostel on the university campus.

According to the complaint, some seniors of second year and third year waylaid them at the college entrance when they were returning to the hostel after the classes were over Tuesday afternoon. The accused seniors allegedly attacked the duo with iron rods and other sharp weapons. They allegedly dragged the duo on iron fence on the college’s boundary leaving them with severe injuries.

The duo also mentioned in the complaint that the seniors chased and attacked them brutally at Siripur Market in broad daylight.

The seniors used to come to the classroom and threaten the junior students to act according to their whims and fancies. They would also threaten the junior students who do not budge to their orders with dire consequences. They threatened the juniors to spoil their career by making them unsuccessful in the exams with the help of some faculty members.

Similarly, several first year students including the victim duo have later submitted a complaint to KK Rout, the Dean of College of Agriculture, OUAT regarding ragging by the seniors.

Meanwhile, the Dean, in the presence of as many as 15 faculties, held a discussion with the victims Tuesday evening and assured of action against the accused seniors after enquiry.
