Raghubar Das sworn-in as Odisha Governor

Bhubaneswar: Former Chief Minister of Jharkhand Raghubar Das was Tuesday sworn in as the 26th Governor of Odisha.

Acting Chief Justice of Orissa High Court Justice Bidyut Ranjan Sarangi administered the oath of office to Das at the Raj Bhavan in Bhubaneswar.

The oath-taking ceremony began at 11:45am with Chief Secretary Pradeep Kumar Jena reading out the warrant of appointment received from President Droupadi Murmu.

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, Union Minister for Education Dharmendra Pradhan, judges of the high court were present among others.

Ahead of assuming office, Das visited Lingaraj temple in the morning. A day earlier, Das arrived in Odisha Monday and visited the 12th-century Jagannath temple in Puri.

Das was named as the new governor of Odisha by President Droupadi Murmu October 18. He will replace Ganeshi Lal.

Das was Jharkhand’s only non-tribal chief minister, who served the state from 2014 to 2019. He started his political career as an activist in the students’ movement spearheaded by Loknayak Jaiprakash Narayan in 1976-77. He became a member of the Janata Party in 1977 and joined the BJP when it was launched. He was also the BJP’s Jharkhand unit president in 2004.
