Malkangiri: Severe and incessant rain that continued for 11 days throughout Malkangiri had submerged most parts of the district. However, improvement was seen in the flood like situation from Thursday and the district administration has made an assessment of loss and damage caused to different sectors.
According to preliminary estimates, the losses are more than Rs 13 crore in the entire Malkangiri district, administration sources said. Apart from this, 7,000 hectares of agricultural land were also hit.
Kalimela and Padia blocks were worst affected due to prolonged and heavy rainfall. About 330 houses were reported to have damaged and 20 electric poles and 10 power transformers were uprooted in the district.
Furthermore, 147km-long roads and 10 culverts in seven blocks of Malkangiri were completely washed away and three bridges were partially damaged, the sources added.
The entire district had recorded a total rainfall of 531 mm on Thursday and 75.94 mm on an average in the past 11 days. Block-wise, the rainfall recorded in Malkangiri 60.2 mm; Mathili 121 mm; Khairaput 103 mm; Kudumulugumma 46 mm; Korukonda 117 mm; Kalimela 40 mm; and Padia 44.4 mm, as per the official sources.
The water level of rivers at Poteru, Kangurukonda, MV-11, Tarlakota, Korukonda have receded gradually and life in Malkangiri district has returned to normal. Road connectivity only between Malkangiri and Sukuma is yet to be restored and the flood water of Jhapra River was flowing 3 feet high on the Malkangiri-Sukuma road.
However, thanks to the efficient flood management, the district administration has evacuated 2200 affected people and accommodated them at 24 flood shelter homes. The local administration has also distributed all essential commodities to them.
