Rain, landslide hit Koraput; 1 missing

Koraput: Koraput has recorded 647.4 mm rainfall in the past 24 hours as heavy rain lashed the district following formation of a low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal, Tuesday.

Reports available with the district emergency office said Kotpad block registered the highest rainfall of 135mm followed by 75mm in Semiliguda, 49.4mm in Nandapur, 32.2mm in Pottangi, 2.6mm in Narayanpatna, 40.2mm in Koraput, 58.4mm in Lamtaput, 5mm in Dashamantapur, 1mm in Lakshmipur, 89.6mm in Jeypore, 3mm in Bandhugaon, 41mm in Kundra, 64mm in Borigumma and 51mm in Boipariguda block.

Incessant rainfall led to an increase in water-level in the major water bodies and reservoirs in the district. The water-level at Telengiri dam stood at 625.60 metres close to the danger mark of 633 mtr.

Similarly, the level at Kolab dam stood at 854 metres near the danger mark of 858 metres.

Reports available from Borigumma said a man, identified as Chintamani Muduli of Dambaturujing village under Borigumma block was swept away in the swirling waters of river Chabberi Monday night. On being informed, district emergency officer Siddharth Pattnaik directed the B.Singhpur police and fire personnel of Borigumma to launch a rescue operation. However, they failed trace Muduli in spite of efforts.

An ODRAF team was pressed into service Tuesday. However, there was no trace of the person when reports last came in.
