Rainbow hues for rainy season

To offset the cloudy days of the monsoon season, try outfits and accessories
in bold, cheerful colours

With grey skies and rainy days dominating this season, most fashionistas are choosing bright colours to wear. The “rainbow” trend is big these days.
Amruta Kar, a Bhubaneswar-based fashion designer, offers a few tips that will have you looking trendy and gorgeous this monsoon season.“Add bold colours to your wardrobe because outside we often have dark rain clouds. Bright colours are eye-catching and can lift your mood. Be it casual wear, a wedding outfit, or clothes for a get-together or formal event, rainbow colours are in. You can play with this colour palette and add a unique touch to your regular style. The key to embrace this trend is to handle it with confidence,” says the designer.

If you’re a person who believes in minimalistic fashion, you can incorporate small quirky accessories, says Amruta. Tassel and pompom earrings come in different hues. Chokers are also an option to add glamour. Carry a small clutch, tote bag or sling bag depending on the occasion. Go for bright solid colours from the rainbow palette itself.
A footwear lover should go for flats and flip-flops this season, says Amruta. Try footwear with funky designs to be noticed.
You can play with colours in make-up. Amruta’s advice: Go for electric colours like blue, orange, green, and yellow. Add a thin stroke to line your eyes, be it waterline or the lash line. Colourful mascaras are in this season. Choose earthy shades for eye shadow, a sultry brown look is worth trying.

If you want a subtle look, go for lip colours in pink and brown tones. However, if you love bold colours, Amruta says, you can opt for fuchsia pinks and oranges as well. Ensure that your make-up is waterproof, so that it doesn’t melt away with the rain.

“Also, remember that the rainbow trend is very whimsical. Try not to go over the top with it. Try to combine colours in a pleasing way. If your outfit is very colourful, then the accessories and make-up should be natural and vice-versa,” says Amruta.

Puja Dey, a fashion designer from Hyderabad, says “Rainbows and colourful stripes are in demand by young and old alike nowadays. They are available for all prices. You can rock the rainbow without looking like Punky Brewster”.
Wear rainbow shoes with a denim shirt or a colourful sheath dress. Slip a rainbow-striped tee under blazer and a pair with denim. Tie a rainbow scarf to your handbag or slip it around the throat with a favourite cotton sundress, suggests Puja.

Monalisha Bishoi, a fashion designer from Cuttack, suggests that women should select beautiful rainbow prints for their kids’ outfits. Kids look fantastic in rainbow colours, she says.
“Children are the most beautiful part of our life. So, we designers often plan for them and try to add something special especially in their outfits and accessories. We could have rainbow prints for their clothes, hair bands, shoes, bags, and socks. Sometimes, school walls are painted in rainbow colours. The children’s bedroom can be painted in bright colours. Parents can try wall stickers in rainbow colours to give a cheerful look to the room,” adds Monalisa.
