Puri: The main accused in the Rakesh Nayak firing case at Siddhamahavir Kumutipatna near Talabania in Puri district Monday evening was injured in an encounter in the wee hours of Tuesday. The history-sheeter has been identified as Rashmiranjan Panda alias Guddu of Kumutipatna.
According to police sources, Guddu and his brother Chandan chased Rakesh of Kumutipatna and shot and injured the latter to settle a past enmity at 8.00pm in the evening, Monday.
On being informed, the police laid a trap to catch Guddu. He opened fire at the cops in a bid to escape. The police retaliated and Guddu sustained bullet injuries on his legs.
He was first rushed to Puri district headquarters hospital and later shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack.
Guddu has many cases of extortion pending against him at different police stations, the police said.
