Ransom letter to CM: Probe report to reach today

Bhubaneswar: The Chhattisgarh Police Tuesday said they will send the inquiry report sought by the Odisha Police on the threat letter sent to Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik by a convict from the Bilaspur jail, Wednesday.
In a telephonic confirmation with OP, Bilaspur SP Arif H Sheikh said he will send the inquiry report to Odisha Police Wednesday. Making light of the episode, Sheik said Puspendra Chouhan, a dreaded dacoit serving a sentence in Bilaspur jail on multiple counts, is a psychopath and has sent the missive only to grab attention. Reportedly, Chouhan had been punished several times in the past for writing similar threat letters to VIPs.
Earlier, a probe by Chhattisgarh Police revealed that Chouhan was mentally unstable. Odisha Police requested its Chhattisgarh counterpart to probe the ransom angle and the threat issued by Chouhan to the Chief Minister. While speaking to the media, Santosh Kumar Upadhyaya, DGP in-charge and ADG – crime said, “Odisha Police has requested its counterpart to conduct a detailed probe into the matter by taking it seriously.”
Chouhan, in his letter received by the home department August 25, demanded `50 crore as a ransom from the CM. The state government had informed Chhattisgarh government about the letter. Chouhan, through his letter, threatened to kill the Chief Minister and some bureaucrats if the ransom is not paid to him. “We verified his name with Chhattisgarh Police. Our probe also revealed that he was suffering from mental disorder. There are at least 40 cases pending against him,” Upadhyaya added.
“Chouhan has confessed to have written the letter to the CM. He was often involved in such activities to remain in limelight. We are in contact with Chhattisgarh Police and the prison authorities there. Further action in this regard will be taken after we get the probe report from Chhattisgarh.” Meanwhile, following the letter from state police, DG (Prisons), Chhattisgarh, visited Bilaspur jail Monday. Chouhan is a native of Janjgir-Champa district in Chhattisgarh, police added.
