Berhampur: The fear for high rise mobile towers for the avian species came true after a rare bird was trapped in a mobile phone tower at Lakhsmi Vihar in this town Saturday.
The bird was identified as a rare spot billed pelican. The bird was trapped in the 150-ft long mobile phone tower. The matter came to the fore after people noticed the bird fluttering while it was stuck on the mobile tower and informed the forest and fire personnel. The bird was finally rescued after a team of fire and forest officials climbed atop the tower and rescued it.
However, the bird was not able to fly due to injury to its wings. Forest officials rushed it to Berhampur veterinary hospital where veterinarian Dr Kiran Kumar Bisoyi administered 10 stitches on its wing. It will take five to six days to recover before it could fly, Dr Bisoyi said. Later, the bird was handed over to the forest officials.
