Bhubaneswar: Doctors at the East Coast Railway (ECoR) Central Hospital here claimed to have successfully conducted a ‘rare surgery’ to correct a congenital anomaly on a-24-year-old girl.
A team of experts, including additional chief health director (Surgeon) J Jena, consultant Debasish Mishra, consultant Samanyu Tripathy and Sk. Sirajuddin and additional chief health director (Anaesthesia) conducted the ‘rare’ procedure on a girl who was unable to walk or even discharge her chores because of the skyline deformity on her right leg.
According to a senior surgeon, who was also a part of the team, this rare procedure was done by releasing the peroneal nerve and cortical osteotomy illizarov of right leg of the patient. Such surgeries are mostly conducted at medical colleges and corporate hospitals. The surgeon added that many leading healthcare facilities in the state capital had expressed their inability to undertake the procedure as it was a rare one.
