Rayagada village as Mahatma Gandhi Shilpa Gram

Rayagada, August 27: The state Khadi and Gramadyog Board would turn Jigidi, a village under Bissamkatak block in the district, into Mahatma Gandhi Shilpa Gram (craft village), chairman Tejeswar Parida of the Board stated Thursday.
A nine-member team led by Parida has been on a three-day visit to the district since Wednesday. The members visited various tribal villages including Chatikana, Kurli, Khambesu, Mundabali and Jigidi and examined various activities including traditional jewellery-making, terracotta work, pottery and bee-keeping methods, taken up by people.
The board would make all-out efforts to introduce products like turmeric, honey, mango and jackfruit in international market, Parida said while addressing the media. This apart, conducive market would be created for the handicraft products and cottage industries of the district so that artisans can get proper value of their craftsmanship, the chairman said.
The team would visit localities with a high density of Lanjia-Saura community Friday to tap the opportunities available there for their development. During a media interaction, Parida urged scribes and intellectuals to bring the hidden cottage industries of the district to the knowledge of the board. Koraput MP Jhinna Hikka was also present during the media briefing.
