Responsibility can be fixed after investigation: CP

Bhubaneswar:  Twin City Police Commissioner Satyajit Mohanty Wednesday said a detailed investigation will unravel who was responsible for the mishap.

In his reaction, the Police Commissioner said, “Accident never comes with a warning. But, if we remain alert and cautious, we can save ourselves. In pursuance of the Supreme Court’s order, our efforts are also on to lessen the death rate 5-10 per cent every year. Accordingly, we have framed our action plan.”

He said the number of vehicles as well as population is increasing since the economy is booming. Every year, 10-15 per cent vehicles are added on the road, he said. “Enforcement doesn’t confine to only police action as accident also depends on road engineering and awareness. Engineering, Education and Enforcement are the three major issues that influence road safety. Accident is caused either due to engineering or mechanical failure or reckless driving or some lapses in enforcement. Checking road mishap depends on multi-departmental efforts,” he argued.

On being queried about the main cause behind yesterday’s mishap, the Police Commissioner replied, “Unless and until the investigation is completed, it wouldn’t be right to conclude who is responsible for yesterday’s tragic incident. But the preliminary investigation on the spot reveals that a buffalo strayed on to the bridge all at once. The driver might have tried to apply brakes and might have lost balance. All these can be known and ascertained after detailed investigation. Only after the detailed investigation is completed, it can be ascertained who is responsible for the accident.”
