RI for dreaded criminal

Berhampur: The Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM) court of Berhampur Monday sentenced a dreaded criminal to five years rigorous imprisonment (RI) here.

Convict Deepak Mandal who is a resident of West Bengal is involved in several criminal cases including murder. He sustained severe injuries in an encounter with the police team of Golanthara police station at Bhairavi road in Ganjam August 31, 2016.

He received a bullet injury in one of his legs and the doctors had to amputate it during treatment. He was sent to jail by Golanthara police after registering a case (126/16) under sections 307/353 IPC and 25/27 Arms Act. During trial, the witness seconded the charges leveled against Mandal and he was sentenced to five years rigorous imprisonment Monday.

Mandal’s accomplice Astam Mandal was earlier convicted in an another exchange of fire case registered at Gopalpur police station.
