Rich candidates lose; poor ones win

Anjani Soren

Baripada: The results of the Assembly and parliamentary elections in Mayurbhanj have stunned political quarters and the BJD.

However, the results have come as a shot in the arm for the BJP after it won in six Assembly seats under this parliamentary segment.

Significantly, rich candidates lost their fight while poor candidates won in the Lok Sabha seat and the Baripada Assembly seat.

The ruling BJD was disappointed when it won in just three Assembly seats only. Enthused over results of the last panchayat elections, the BJP had been working hard to win all seats.

In 2014, the BJD had won all the nine Assembly seats under the parliamentary constituency. Now people wondered over win of poor candidates even as money and muscle power provided edge to candidates in elections.

There were eight candidates in the fray for Mayurbhanj parliamentary seat. The richest among them was JMM leader Anjani Soren. She slid to third position in the contest.

However, BJP’s Biseswar Tudu, counted as a poor candidate, came out victorious as MP.

As per her affidavit, BJD leader Sarojini Hembram is the richest candidate in Baripada Assembly seat. But she had to face defeat from BJP’s Prakash Soren, who is the poorest among the candidates.
