RMC’s proposed compost plant evokes protests

Rourkela: The Rourkela Municipal Corporation (RMC) had invited tenders for a compost plant at an open space near Bisi Square of Koel Nagar. However, the project was vehemently opposed by the Rourkela Juba Jagruti Mancha and the Koel Nagar Welfare Association.

The locals alleged that dumping of garbage at the compost plant will cause pollution and create an unhealthy atmosphere. As the RMC is not regularly cleaning drains and garbage in the area, the people of Koel Nagar are already facing health hazards.

According to sources, the location was earlier identified for a club house and a civic centre in the master plan. However, the civic authorities are now trying to set up a compost plant there, ignoring the previous plan.

As per the 1978 guidelines of the government, no individual, political party, or the municipal body is authorised to construct anything in Koel Nagar. Despite lack of proper authorisation the RMC had invited tenders for the compost plant.

Local residents warned the civic body saying, “It will be held responsible for any untoward situation in future.”
