Road blockade after mishap kills construction worker

Junagarh: Tension ran high on National Highway-26 near Hathi river bridge in this block of Kalahandi district after a youth was fatally hit by an over-speeding vehicle. The deceased was Bhagirathi Thakur (26) of Khutuluguda village under Dharmagarh block.

Irate villagers placed the body on the NH and staged an agitation, demanding necessary compensation for the bereaved family and immediate arrest of the vehicle driver.

The protest halted vehicular movement and hundreds of vehicles were left stranded on both sides of the NH.

Junagarh IIC Rajendra Dehuri and tehsildar Upendra Luha reached the spot and pacified the mob. However, the protest continued as no compensation was announced.

Thakur worked as a contract worker for the bridge construction firm. A truck ran over him while he was engaged in the work. He was rescued in a critical condition and admitted to the Junagarh community health centre (CHC). However, doctors declared him ‘brought dead’. Attempts were continuing to end the protest.
