Kendrapara/Choudwar: Eight persons were killed in separate road mishaps in Kendrapara, Cuttack and Jagatsinghpur districts Monday.
In the first incident, four people died while five others were injured when a four-wheeler had a collision with a truck at about 6.20 am Monday near Kakatia Chowk on Cuttack-Chandabali road under Kendrapara Sadar police station, said IIC Kabuli Barik.
According to Barik, due to dense fog the driver of the four-wheeler that was going at a great speed failed to see the truck coming from the opposite direction.
According to police, Subash Rout (54) and his four family members were scheduled to go to Mumbai in a train from Cuttack railway station. They hired a Bolero and started their journey from Bilikana under Rajnagar police station. Later, the drive of the vehicle picked up three others from Rajpur and Mainshigotha villages to drop them at Cuttack. As the train was scheduled to depart on 7.20am, the driver was driving at a great speed.
The impact of the collision was so severe that three persons including the driver died on the spot. The locals sent the six critically injured to Nischintakoili CHC. Later, they were shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital where another person died.
The deceased were identified as Subash’s wife Bhagabati (45), Bibhuti Bhusan Rout (23), the nephew of Subash, Subrata alias Satyabrata Rout, the driver of the vehicle, and another person.
The injured were Subash, Susant Rout (48), the brother of Subash, Annapurna Rout (36), the wife of Susant and two others.
The family had come from Mumbai to Rajnagar to perform ‘post death rituals’ of their kin. After performing the rituals, they were on their way back to Cuttack to board a Mumbai-bound train.
Police sent the bodies to Kendrapara district headquarters hospital for post-mortem.
In another incident, two persons were killed and 15 others injured when a passenger bus carrying them overturned near Choudwar Monday evening, the police said.
