Bhubaneswar, August 9: Kharavelnagar police foiled a burglary bid by busting a gang of four robbers near Forum Mart in Satya Nagar, Sunday.
A country-made pistol, live cartridges, a dagger, iron rods and a torchlight were seized from the accused.
The accused were identified as Raju Nayak (26) SK Sabir (25), both of Harijan Basti in Kharvelnagar, SK Hajibur Rehman (33) of Masjid Colony at Mali Sahi, and P Chenna Reddy (22), of Press Colony basti.
Kharvelnagar police said they made the arrests based on a tip-off from an informant about the gang who were reportedly assembling in the area to burgle homes in the residential area of Satyanagar. Sub-inspector Manoj Swain said three or four of their accomplices managed to escape.
The gang was involved in at least four cases of robbery and theft in July alone, committed under Kharavelnagar police limits, sources said. The gang had earlier stolen an auto-rickshaw and had snatched a woman’s chain, and were also involved in the theft of a scooter from Press Colony and also looting a man of `5,000, police said.
The same gang a few days back stole an ATM card from a man near Shriya Talkies and withdrew `42,000, police said.
A case under Section 399 (preparing to commit robbery) and 402 (assembly for purpose of robbery) of IPC was registered against the men and they were produced in court Sunday.
