Bhubaneswar: Rourkela became the only city in Odisha to bag ‘One Star’ rating in Swachh Survekshan 2021 – the results of which were announced in New Delhi Saturday evening.
According to a source, Rourkela was placed at 57th rank. As many as 372 cities of the country with a population of one to 10 lakh had taken part in the survey under Garbage Free City category.
Sundargarh was adjudged in the survey as the ‘Best District’ in Odisha for effective Urban Sanitation Management. A total of 659 districts from 13 states had taken part in the national level survey, the source informed.

Taking to its official Twitter handle later in the day, Rourkela Municipal Corporation (RMC) wrote, “With the cooperation of citizens, we pledge to take urban sanitation to a higher standard in the coming days.”
It is pertinent to mention here that Bhubaneswar improved its ranking to 144 in the Swachh Survekshan ranking for this year. Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) carried out the survey.
Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) was earlier placed at 288th rank in 2018 and the 274th rank in 2019, respectively.
On being contacted, BMC deputy commissioner (sanitation), Suvendu Kumar Sahu said, “We have to complete the construction of micro composting centers (MCCs) and focus on 100 per cent door-to-door collection of segregated wastes. Around Rs 90 crore is being spent annually and 2,300 sanitation workers have been engaged in keeping the city clean. The civic body has done well in other parameters.”
Cuttack was meanwhile ranked 162, Sambalpur town at 167, Baripada at 202 and Bhadrak at 261 in the national survey.
Swachh Survekshan conducted every year ranks different cities and urban local bodies (ULBs) on parameters including waste segregation and garbage disposal as part of the Swachh Bharat Mission.
