Row rages over efficacy of lift irrigation project

Amarpalli: The state government has been implementing a lot of schemes to promote irrigation and farming. But some projects have failed to make progress for various factors.

A lift irrigation project has remained incomplete in Kenjhiriapalli panchayat under Birmaharajpur block in Subarnapur district. A controversy has broken out over its status and efficacy.

Locals alleged that the lift irrigation project-2 at Telipalli village is yet to be operational. They have apprised the executive engineer of Sonepur lift irrigation division.

However, members of the local Panipanchayat have claimed that the project has been completed and it irrigates farmlands. They have written about it to the sub-collector.

Sonepur lift irrigation division set up the lift irrigation project-2 in 2020-21 at a cost of Rs 9.20 lakh at Telipalli. The project is capable of irrigating 20 hectares. But famers have claimed that the project work is still incomplete.

“Motor has not been fitted while pipes have not been laid. We demand an investigation into efficacy of the project,” farmers complained to the executive engineer.

However, executive engineer Sushant Samal said the project is completed and the allegation made by some farmers is baseless. Even members of the panipanchayat have dismissed the allegation of farmers unfounded.

They have told the district administration that the project is working and irrigating farmlands.
