Talcher: The police have recovered huge amount of money along with a mauser during a routine checking of vehicles on National Highway No. 53 near Santhapada under Talcher police station limits Tuesday afternoon.
The seized cash would be around `2 crore. However, the exact amount of cash is yet to be ascertained, said the police sources.
On a tip-off, Talcher police intercepted a car (OD-19D 2120) near Balhar Chhak which was travelling from Bhubaneswar with the unaccounted for cash.
Two persons were detained in this connection.Talcher police IIC Soubhagya Swain is investigating the case. The seizure of Mauser along with the cash has raised suspicion that it could belong to some political party.
Meanwhile, the flying squad of Election Commission Wednesday seized `27.49 lakh at Mahipani Square under Bisra police station near Rourkela in Sundargarh district.
Police sources said while the flying squad was checking the vehicles to prevent illegal transportation of cash, liquor and drugs in view of the elections the driver of a numberless car threw a bag containing the cash and fled the spot.
Police, launched a manhunt to nab the driver and two persons travelling in the car and started an investigation to ascertain the sources of the cash.
Similarly, in another incident the flying squad seized unaccounted cash worth `2 lakh from the vehicle of a BJD candidate from Lanjigarh Assembly seat near Jayapatna.
