Bhubaneswar: Over Rs 51.15 crore have been plundered in 3,406 cybercrime cases in the state in the last two years (2019 & 20) according to the Minister of State (MoS) Home, Dibya Shankar Mishra’s statement in Assembly, Monday.
In a written reply to BJD legislator Soumya Ranjan Patnaik, the minister said 3,406 cybercrime cases amounting to Rs 51,15,28,881 have been registered in two years.
A total of 1,475 cybercrime cases involving fraud of Rs 16.08 crore were registered in 2019 while it jumped to 1,931 cases with cheating of Rs 35.07 crore in the last year, Mishra said.
He also notified that a total of 708 persons (342 in 2019 & 366 in 2020) inside and outside the state have been arrested for their involvement in the cybercrime cases. Convictions were reported against only two cases in 2019 while no conviction has been reported against the cases filed in 2020, he stated.
In another reply to the House, the minister stated that 2,984 rapes, 1,470 murders, five bank robbery and 17 ATM loot cases were reported in 2020.
Mishra said that Odisha Police has never been biased. Immediate steps are taken on receiving any information about any incident or accident and stringent actions as per law are taken against criminals. Strong legal actions are being taken against the violators irrespective of their position and status, the minister pointed out.
“Odisha Police is always ready for the service of the poor, weak and downtrodden. Emphasis has been given to the implementation of 5T and Mo Sarkar with an objective to provide better policing to the people,” he added.
Countermeasures taken by Odisha police to pin down cybercriminals include the establishment of cybercrime cells in every district, three dedicated police stations in cities like Berhampur, Sambalpur & Rourkela, issuance of Compendium on CYBER CRIME INVESTIGATION and establishment of Cyber Forensic Labs across the state.
