Ruckus at Sishu Bhawan over child’s death

Cuttack: The death of a four-year-old kid at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Post Graduate Institute of Paediatrics (Sishu Bhawan) here, Monday, saw family members creating a ruckus in the premier childcare facility alleging medical negligence for the toddler’s death.

According to sources, Rabindra Panda, a resident of Garadi village under Simulia police limits in Balasore, had brought his ailing four-month-old son to Sishu Bhawan around 11am, Sunday.

“As the kid was critical, doctors suggested an ICU facility for him. However, due to non-availability of bed in the ICU, the child had to be kept at the casualty. It was around 3.30pm when the toddler died,” said a source at Sishu Bhawan.

“Our child died as the hospital authorities failed to arrange for an ICU bed for him,” rued a family member.

The situation was, however, brought under control after the intervention of Lalbagh police. “No formal complaint has been lodged with us. Action will be taken once we get any,” Lalbagh IIC Ashutosh Mishra said.

When asked, Sishu Bhawan superintendent (in-charge) Anil Kumar Mohanty, however, denied receiving any complaint in this regard. “We’ll look into it if anyone approaches us with a complaint,” Mohanty said.
