Sale of fake eggs in city

Bhubaneswar: Fake eggs are back in the city after 2017. They are on sale too for some strange reasons. Consumers who mistakenly bought such eggs Sunday alleged that these eggs are made of plastic-like material.

They are found to be in circulation in Nayapalli area here.

Tension prevailed after some consumers alleged that a grocery shop in Nayapalli area was dealing with the fake eggs and those who bought them cheaper felt cheated.

According to sources, a few youths residing in VIP Colony under Nayapalli police station limits here and preparing for Company Secretaries examination have complained to police that they bought eggs for lunch and found them to be fake.

The youths said they purchased half a dozen eggs, each for `5 from a nearest grocery shop along with other provisions.

However, when they broke the shells to prepare omelette they found yolk-like white- liquid substance with yellowish tinge in it. When they cooked the content, it emitted a foul odour. When they tried to eat the dish, its smell made them puke.

Enraged, the students rushed to the grocery shop with the remaining eggs and questioned shopkeeper Rajendra Behera about the eggs. They broke the shells before the motley crowd and tasted the substance but Behera asserted that the content was perfectly alright and genuine. Soon, a commotion ensued at the shop.

Nayapalli police reached the spot on a tip-off and seized a cartoon of eggs from the vendor.
The students formally lodged a complaint at the police station in this regard.

The police have started an investigation and detained Behera in this connection.

Notably, on the basis of a similar allegation, the state government ordered a probe in 2017.
