Bhubaneswar: The Sambalpur railway station is set to get a facelift Thursday as a number of proposed passenger amenities and welfare works will be dedicated to the public by the Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Dharmendra Pradhan.
The projects which are scheduled to be inaugurated include-escalators, improved front facade, foot over bridge, ramps, food plaza and mechanized boot laundry. A number of other dignitaries comprising Sambalpur MP Nagendra Kumar Pradhan and MLA Raseswari Panigrahi, are slated to take part in the event.
The East Coast Railway (ECoR) said that the boot laundry will help in providing good quality washed linens for the comfort and satisfaction of passengers during train journey. The laundry has been constructed at Sambalpur Coaching Depot at a cost of Rs 6.45 crores.
The zonal office said that 68 railway stations identified by the Railway Ministry for redevelopment and were planned to be modified as a model station. “In ECoR, Sambalpur and Cuttack stations were identified for redevelopment. Sambalpur Station is an ‘A’ Class Station as well as the Divisional headquarter of Sambalpur Division. With a view to enhance passenger comfort and to develop the various passenger facilities and also to beautify the station premises two different works were sanctioned,” an official from the ECoR said.
The proposed food plaza located on platform no 1 at Sambalpur could be accessible from the circulating area. The department claims that passengers can now avail the facility round the clock. The food plaza is expected to offer north Indian dishes, south Indian dishes, Chinese and Continental cuisines as well.
The department said that the front facade and circulating area were improved with a total cost of 3.5 crore while provisions of escalators along with foot over bridge and ramps have also been readied for the Sambalpur Station at a cost of Rs 2.65 crores.
