Sambalpur, Jan 7: A new traffic control system would be in place in the town soon to curb the crime rate and to have better police-auto driver relationship, assistant superintendent of police Sushil Kumar Panigrahi said Tuesday in a press meet organised at the conference hall of the SP office here.

“The movement of the auto rickshaws in the town would be regulated as the traffic service has been in a bad shape of late,” Panigrahi added.
While the town has been accorded the status of a corporation recently, the government has declared to set up a police commissionerate comprising Sambalpur municipality, Hirakud and Burla NACs and 67 villages under Dhanakauda block.

Reports said, the town, despite several government programmes, is grappling with traffic woes. Hence, police administration would introduce a new traffic system and adopt new technologies to address the issue. Special identity cards would be issued to over 1,000 drivers of auto-rickshaws plying under six auto associations in Sambalpur, Hirakud and Burla civic authorities.

District police administration will issue forms to auto-rickshaw drivers and they would submit these by January 15. Applicants would be provided
identity cards by January 31. Action would be taken from February 1 against those who would fail to submit their filled-in forms. Besides, special parking zones would be created for two and four-wheelers and parking lots have been finalised after discussions with officials of the works department, sources said, adding, the work would start in next three to four days.

Similarly, the police would keep vigil on drivers of school vans to ensure safety of children and act against drunken drivers. Police would draw the attention of the collector to stop overloading of auto-rickshaws and ensure regulated fares in the town, officials said.

SDPO Utkal Keshari Dash, traffic inspector S Biswal and office bearers of the auto-rickshaws’ associations were present in the press meet.
