Nischintkoili: Some miscreants engaged in unlawful sand quarrying and transportation allegedly attacked a Revenue Inspector (RI) under Mahanga tehsil in Cuttack district Saturday afternoon.
According to an FIR lodged by the RI, he was allegedly attacked by some sand mafias in the presence of local police at Koliatha area in the district, when he tried to stop smuggling of the minor mineral.
The revenue official was identified as Ganeswar Hembram.

Ganeswar got confirmed information in the afternoon that illegal sand quarrying was going on at Gunupur area near Birupa river. A team from Mahanga tehsil led by the RI raided the spot and seized a tractor (without registration number) which was illegally transporting sand.
However, when the seized vehicle was being taken to local police station, owner of the tractor and his relatives attacked the team. Ganeswar sustained grievous head injuries in the attack and was immediately rushed to Mahanga community health centre (CHC) in the district.
On being informed, Mahanga police reached the spot and initiated a probe into the incident. Stringent legal action will be taken against the wrongdoers, an official of the police station asserted.
