SC adjourns OMDC’s plea to resume mining

New Delhi: The Supreme Court (SC) will hear an application filed by Orissa Minerals Development Company (OMDC) Limited seeking permission to resume mining operations in the state November 8, 2019.

A two-judge bench of the apex court comprising Justices Deepak Gupta and Justice Surya Kant posted the matter for hearing to the said date.

During the hearing, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta submitted to the SC that the OMDC has paid the amount due in respect of third mine – Bhadrashi iron and manganese lease October 4.

However, the counsel appearing for the state government sought time to verify the fact. The apex court granted time to the state government to verify the fact and posted the matter for hearing to November 8.

Notably, the SC had imposed penalty on several mining companies operating in the state for not complying with the environmental norms August 2, 2017 and asked them to pay fine amount for availing environmental clearance to resume mining operations.
