Scale up ecosystem for research: Odisha Chief Secretary to IIIT

Bhubaneswar: In an attempt to make Bhubaneswar-based International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) a centre of excellence, Chief Secretary Asit Tripathy advised the authorities concerned to scale up research programmes in the institute.

Chairing the Board of Governors (BoG) meeting of the institute, Tripathy directed the institute to work out the ‘way forward’ for scaling-up research and specialisation ecosystem in the institute. The way forward should be short-term, medium-term and long-term objectives with broad timelines, he said.

The IIIT established by the state government in 2006 has achieved 91 per cent placement in 2019-20. The institute has maintained a placement record of 90 to 94 per cent during the last five years, sources said.

As many as 26 companies including Microsoft, McKinsey, Visa, Dell, Turtlement and Amazon have visited the IIIT campus during the year 2019-20 for campus recruitment. The pass-outs have been offered appointment on an average salary of Rs 4.85 lakh per annum. The maximum salary offer from the companies has been Rs 41 lakh per annum.

IIIT director Gopal Nayak said the institute is successfully running the innovative methodologies like self-learning course, self-development course and coding competition. A self-learning course is introduced in each semester. The students pick a subject, study on their own and write a personal learning paper.

Institute’s Registrar Ajit Kumar Das said a team of IIIT students secured top rank in Google online marketing challenge of the current year. Presently, IIIT is providing consultancy to the government in nine different projects.
