Bhubaneswar: Even though 18 days have elapsed since the cyclonic storm Fani pulverising Kandalei tribal hamlet of Chhatabar panchayat on the city outskirts, no step has been taken to repair the only primary school there.
According to the villagers, the cyclonic storm has blown away the asbestos roof of the primary school.
A social outfit from New Delhi had assisted the villagers to set up the school a few years ago. The state government had appointed two teachers at the school.
“The school has been badly damaged by the cyclonic storm. Holding classes after the school reopens post summer vacation will be impossible. The state government should consider the issue and take immediate steps to repair the school building,” said social activist Sushant Sahu.
The villagers, meanwhile, have urged the Forest, Tribal development and Panchayati Raj departments to repair the school building at the earliest.
“The tropical storm has damaged all thatched houses of the hamlet comprising 46 families. However, 10 families have constructed concrete houses under various housing schemes. All the thatched houses have completely been damaged by the May 3 storm,” said a resident of Kandalei.
