School students join plastic-free drive

TOWARDS A NEW DAWN

Khurda/Bolgada, August 28: Students of Kanrapur Beguniamula School under Arikama gram panchayat of Bolgada block have extended their support to the plastic-free campaign launched by Orissa POST and Dharitri here Tuesday.

After their daily prayer, the students pledged to make Odisha a plastic-free state. They also promised not to bring food and books in polythene bags and vowed to ban their use during any function in the school.

An awareness meeting was also held during the recess, where the teachers educated the students about demerits of plastic and polythene bags. They also suggested to the pupils to create awareness among their families and villagers against the use of plastic and polythene bags.

Speaking on the occasion, the Headmaster (in-charge) Hrushikesh Champati said he had been spreading the message of cleaning the environment since the initial days as teacher. He also suggested to the students to boycott plastic.

Two students of Class VII and VI, Kalyani Hota and Sitaram Panda, said they had tried to create awareness about the demerits of use of plastic and polythene bags, but in vain. However, they were hopeful that state government’s decision to ban use of polythene bags and the plastic-free drive, initiated by Orissa POST and Dharitri would bring awareness among the people of the state.

Similarly, Sumati Dei, a teacher of the school said plastic and polythene bags have been polluting the environment, which was creating trouble for all the living beings. The human is benefiting from the use of plastic and polythene bags, however it had to change itself for a pollution-free environment. This could be only possible by creating awareness, she added.
