Berhampur: District administration of Ganjam and Malkangiri Wednesday advised their education officers to close down the schools and anganwadi centres in view of incessant rains and rising water levels in the rivers.
Owing to a flood-like situation in Ganjam, District Education Officer (DEO) Sanatana Panda — acting on the orders of the collector – suspended the classes.
According to DEO Panda, owing to a low pressure area over Bay of Bengal, the district has received very heavy rainfall over the past 48 hours leading to a flood-like situation. The schools have been closed to ensure safety of the students.
Similarly, in Malkangiri, the collector Wednesday declared closure of all government and private schools along with anganwadi centres.
The teachers, however, have been asked to report to duty and help the administration in facilitating relief.
That said, since the orders were issued Wednesday at about 8:30am, most of the schools were already open by that time.
