Jajpur: The state government has asked all universities and colleges in the state to impart self defence training to girl students on their campuses.
The training, to be imparted to college level students as part of Odisha State Youth Policy-2013, will be supervised by the self-defence cell of the higher education department at state level.
The decision is being taken in view of rising cases of atrocities against girls, said a source.
A directive on this context has been issued by the higher education department to all nodal colleges, government and private degree colleges, aided colleges and universities of the state to implement the training schedule in academic year 2019-2020, the source added.
Joint secretary of higher education department Shyamali Mohapatra has asked the collectors to ensure that the scheme is implemented fully in their districts. Beside, the sub-collector, BDOs and tehsildars have been asked to supervise the implementation of the scheme.
“Given the females are not as physically strong as males, they often go through various kinds of torture. Self defence training should be made mandatory in the curriculum and expert trainers need to be appointed as a solution to this issue,” said governor awardee teacher Sanjukta Mohapatra.
