Session on feminist Ismat Chughtai’s works rivets readers

BHUBANESWAR: Readings and discussions on Ismat Chugtai, who wrote extensively on themes including female sexuality and femininity, middle-class gentility, and class conflict, often from a Marxist perspective, were held by Walking BookFairs here Sunday.
To mark the recent observance of Women’s Day, the book club discussed the powerful and important works of noted feminist writer Ismat Chugtai.
“Since March is celebrated as Women’s month around the world to mark the achievements of women, we are celebrating women writers all March at our bookstore by focusing on brilliant women writers from around the world,” said a member of the group.
We have a special discount of 40% on all books by women writers to help more people read books penned by women writers.

The Walking BookFairs event is a weekly activity to promote reading among the folks of Bhubaneswar. It is a unique platform for readers and non-readers alike to come together, explore and discover new and diverse literature from around the world, meet other people, express their own ideas and have conversations about books, writers, literature, art and society.
The Walking BookFairs Book Club meets every Sunday evening at our bookstore to read and discuss various books from around the world. It is a free and open platform for all where everybody is welcome to join in.
The club has been holding regular readings and discussions from various acclaimed writers and notable books for many years. We have focused on bringing the important work of new and diverse writers to readers’ attention through these book clubs.
Booker prize winning American author Paul Beatty, award winning Nigerian writer Abubakar Adam Ibrahim, Sahitya Akademi award winning writers Easterine Kire and Hansda Sowvendra Shekhar, Nobel prize winning writer V.S Naipaul, Dalit literature, Women writers and poets have been part of our readings and discussions.
“Apart from this, we also conduct many other activities to promote books and reading including author interaction sessions, book readings, book signings and poetry readings among others. Various acclaimed authors including Ruskin Bond, Hansda Sowvendra Shekhar, Akhil Nayak, Pankaj Sekhsaria, Easterine Kire, Susmita Bagchi have done book readings at our bookstore in Bhubaneswar,” said another member.
It was an insightful and enriching experience for all those who participated in the intuitive discussions. Sessions like this would go a long way in enhancing folks’ interest in reading works of feminist authors.
