Cuttack, August 27: Five more newborns died at Sishu Bhawan Thursday, taking the toll to 37 in the last seven days, even as a high-level meeting charted out some measures to arrest the spree of deaths.
The mother of a deceased child from Chandikhol alleged neglect by doctors and nurses, in a complaint to the hospital superintendent. The woman said her child was admitted to the surgery ward August 25 and was to be operated upon Thursday. However, blood was not available on time and the child was taken to the ICU, following which he died early morning, she said.
“The intestine was severely infected. The operation was scheduled for Thursday but the child died before it could be done,” said surgery department head PK Jena.
Meanwhile, revenue divisional commissioner (central) Bikash Chandra Mohapatra held a meeting where it was decided that one assistant professor would be present at night.
