Rajgangpur: Rajgangpur police detained six persons in connection with a case wherein a man and his sister-in-law were made to wear a garland of shoes and then paraded in the village.

According to a source, Jiten Barua, a resident of Fakarpada village under Rajgangpur police limits in Sundargarh had an extramarital affair with his sister-in-law. Both were married though but had eloped some days ago.

Following the incident, the woman’s husband had lodged an FIR with the police and declared that he would not accept her as his wife. On the other hand, Jiten had taken her to his house, promising to take care of her and her three children.

However, it did not go down well with the villagers. To decide what punishment should be handed out to the couple, they convened a village meeting. As per the decision, the couple was ostracized from the village. But before that, they forced them to wear a garland of shoes and go around the village.

Some villagers had recorded the entire incident and later uploaded it on social media platforms. As the video went viral, police interfered and rescued the couple who had since been staying outside the village.

Further investigation is underway.
