Actress Sobhita Dhulipala marked her entry in the Hindi film industry with Raman Raghav 2.0. Recently, she made her debut in Telugu films with Goodachari, which was well received.
Before venturing into films, Sobhita was a model and bagged the Femina Miss India title in 2013. She says that it was after the Miss India contest that she began to pursue acting. Her first efforts at acting were in ads.
Born and brought in Visakhapatnam, Sobhita moved to Mumbai for higher studies when she was 16. At the time, acting was not something she was interested in.
“I grew up always engrossed in books. It was after the Miss India contest and modelling assignments that I began to pursue acting, first through ads. I found myself at home in the field and have been devoted to it since my first film audition for Raman Raghav 2.0,” Sobhita says.
She continues, “Frankly, I see myself as a story-teller and acting happens to be my medium of expression, for now. I am curious about people and what motivates them, so I want to explore as many movie genres as possible. There is no barrier as far as genre is concerned.”
Sobhita explains how she got a role in the film Goodachari. “Adivi Sesh who dons many hats in this project called me after watching my videos on YouTube and narrated the story of the film. It was a very well-developed story and I had no apprehensions. I flew down to Hyderabad and we took things forward from there.”
In Goodachari, she plays the character of Sameera Rao, an emotionally-driven psychologist from Harvard. According to Sobhita, Goodachari has all the elements like action, friendship, deceit, father-son relationship and many other dimensions of the human relationship. She says she had a great time working in the Telugu cinema as the industry has films with good content.
Sobhita was nominated for the critic’s choice best-supporting performance at Cannes 2016 for her role in Raman Raghav 2.0. “I distinctly remember feeling very moved on hearing the news. I also felt I should be more responsible with my choice of films.”
If she were not an actress, Sobhita would have pursued literature and economics. The actress wants to work with actors and directors who are pushing boundaries with their narrative style.
After Goodachari, Sobhita will be seen in The Body with Emraan Hashmi and Rishi Kapoor, directed by Jeethu Joseph, which is slated to release next year. Moothon with Nivin Pauly, directed by Geetu Mohandas, will be entered for a major film festival before release. She will also be seen in a
mini-series by Zoya Akhtar at the beginning of 2019.
